How a chance observation has led to unravelling the top two factors in the Google Algorithm.

A web page of mine was in position 1 on Google for many years but fell to position 2 for a few weeks.

The page that had moved into number one positionIt was an article on the website of a national newspaper.

How was this page achieving position 1 status?

  1.  The keyword was not in the title tag.
  2. It scored poorly with Internet Business Promoter and Website Auditor for on-page factors.
  3. It had a PageRank of zero and there were very few external backlinks. (My page was PageRank 3).

There is debate amongst SEO experts as to whether PageRank is of any importance in SEO and positioning on search engine results pages (SERPs) because a page with PageRank 0 can achieve top positioning.

The home page of the newspaper's website had a PageRank of 8.

It occurred to me that it might be that for internal pages it is the home page PageRank that is of greatest importance in the Google algorithm. The more Google SERP's I looked at them more this seemed to be the case.

Why are Wikipedia pages usually highly placed? Wikipedia's home page has a PageRank 8.

This could not explain how some home pages with zer on PageRank could have high positioning. It became apparent that these home pages were effectively receiving a boost in their PageRank when they competed for a keyword (add 4 with a maximum of 5 - (Video - G-Factor-2).

A Controversial but Verifiable Theory

Follow the logic and the evidence presented on this page and much of the mist around SEO will disappear.

This theory provides a ground-breaking development in search engine optimization.


Google revolutionized search positioning by including backlinks into its algorithm. Before Google, search engines determined positioning by on-page factors alone.On-page factors include the placing of the targeted keywords in page title tags, header tags and the body of the page. Off-page factors relate to backlinks.

An extenstive analysis of the top Google results pages for hundreds of keywords was undertaken.

It became apparent that four key facts must be recognised together to understand the importance of PageRank in positioning and SEO.


  1. Google looks at home pages and internal pages differently.
  2. For internal pages, Google looks at the home page PageRank in its view of the importance of the page - G-Factor-1.
  3. Home pages optimised for a keyword receive a boost - G-Factor-2.
  4. The PageRank information made available to us is at least three months out of date.


  5. The leading search engine optimisers unanimously hold that PageRank is meaningless in positioning  on search engine results pages and SEO. They also accept that off-page factors are more important for positioning  than on-page factors.Those who have only looked at one of these at a time could not have appreciated the true significance of PageRank.

     

    PageRank Indicator

    Google provides a toolbar with a PageRank indicator available for Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers.

    The following web page ( Figure 1) is in position '5' for the keyword 'SEO cost' on Google.com. Positioning the cursor over the horizontal PageRank indicator results in the Googe statement "PageRank is Google's view of the importance of this page which in this case is '0' compared to a maximum of 10. We are presented with a single number whereas Google has access to the many decimal places.

    The major argument against PageRank in SEO is that pages with zero PageRank can be in the top positions, even for competitive keywords.  

     

    In Table 1,  keywords relating to 'SEO' were obtained from the Google Keyword Tool. The PageRanks for the top 10 positoned pages on Google.com were entered together with the competiton - number of competing pages. Each of these keywords are highly competitive. For these selected keywords , there are eleven top positioned pages with PageRanks of zero.

    This data confirms that pages with zero PageRank can be in the top 10 positions for highly competitive keywords.

    So should we simply accept that PageRank is Dead?

    No. We cannot.

    We have a problem.

     According to Google:-

     

    PageRank Zero

    So either

    1. Google is misleading us.

    or

    2. We have all been misinterpreting Google’s statement.

     

    It is, therefore, particularly noteworthy that we are not told which page’s PageRank Google is referring to.

    A second option to consider is that it is a different page’s PageRank that “is Google’s view of the importance of this page.”

    The obvious second choice page would be the home page.

    Now take a look, if you will,  at the corresponding home page PageRank of this website - it is '6' as seen in Figures 2 and 3.

    With few exceptions, internal pages with zero PageRank in high positions on Google prove to have home page PageRanks with significant PageRank. On the few occasions that the home page PageRank is also zero, the latter has risen within a few months. The PageRank data available to us is at least three months out of date.

    In Figure 4, seven pages (URLS) in top ten positions have PageRank '0' and they are in white cells (boxes). Without exception, the corresponding home pages of these websites have higher PageRanks up to 8.

    Four web pages with PageRank '0' in  top ten positions are in pink cells. One of them is http://seoprices.net/ and this is a home page.

    It is now apparent that home pages that are in top positions must be receiving a boost to their PageRanks. It is like 'home advantage' in sport but a far stronger effect.

    The best fit that could be found was to add 4 to a maximum of five: a home page with a PageRank of 0 becomes 4, a home page with PageRank of 1-4  becomes 5 and no change is made to those with a PageRank of 5 or more. Keyword SEO Pro highlights top pages that are home pages in pink (right columns) and if the home page PageRank (left columns) has been given a boost (G-Factor-2) it is indicated in green.

    The hypothesis that PageRank is effectively the best indicator we have for Google’s assessment of off-page factors for a web page is readily verifiable and in practice proves to be well supported.

    The importance of understanding PageRank in SEO:

    If your webpage is not in the top ten positions for a keyword, it will receive very little of the available traffic.

    The web page in

    • position 1 will receive 40%,
    • position 10 - 2.8%
    • position 31 - 0.12%

     

    We have all asked:-

    "How can I get my web pages to the top positons for my preferred keywords?"

    There are 8 million searches each month for "SEO".

    My Recommendation - Take out the "How" and ask:

    Can I get mey web pages to the top positons for my preferred keywords?

    There are only 2,000 searches for "keyword difficulty"!

     

    PageRank is the equivalent of "Divisions"  in Football

    • In England, the above teams are at the top of the Premier Division.
    • If your team is in the Premier Division you have a chance to beat them.
    • If your team is in a division three or four below, you have no chance.
    • Similary, if your website home page is three or more PageRanks below the average of the top ten for a keyword, top page positions for an internal page is very unlikely.

    • Example: Your home page has a PageRank of 2 and the average PageRank for a desirable keyword is 5.2. That keyword is currently out of range for your website. You cannot achieve top ten positioning for it. Do not spend your time or money on it. Find a less popular keyword / keyword phrase that is in within range.
    • Keyword SEO Pro shows you at a glance the authority (PageRanks) of the home pages of the top ten web pages for each keyword in a list of upt to 50 at a time.
    • If you wish to be found on Google for a keyword that is currently out of range for your website for natural search, consider Pay Per Click such as Google Adwords.

     

    On-page optimisation is the equivalent of "Team Tactics" and "Individual Coaching"

    • If your team is in the Premier Division but not near the top, or in the next division down, better team tactics may win on the day.
    • But if your team is two or three divisions below, you have no chance, however good your tactics.

    Off-page optimisation is the equivalent of climbing up through the divisions.

    Climbing up the divisions takes time in football and also in SEO.

    In SEO, it is about obtaining appropriate backlinks and increasing PageRank.

    The value of each backlink depends on:

    • A link from a high PageRank web page is more valuable than one from a web page with lower PageRank.
    • The more links on a web page, the less the value of each outbound link.
    • A backlink from a page or website that is closely related in content to the receiving page carries more weight than one from an unrelated page; a link from a golf course website to a professional golfer’s web page would be more valuable than a link from a restaurant.
    • Backlinks have greater influence if keywords are in the anchor text, the text used in the link.

    • Google is looking for natural and not artificially acquired links. Links that appear in large batches at irregular intervals or in one sector only such as social bookmark sites may be considered to be artificial and therefore of no value.

    The Relationship between backlinks and PageRank

    The relationship between PageRank and the number of backlinks has been analysed for 500 home pages. These were obtained on Google for several different countries for short- and long-tail keywords. The number of links were all determined from AllTheWeb.

    It is no surprise that as a rule, higher PageRank is associated with a greater number of backlinks

    This data reveals two interesting facts.

    a. There is a large variation in the range of backlinks for each PageRank (Least and Most).

    b. The range of number of backlinks for different PageRanks overlap.

     The best modality for determining keyword difficulty is PageRank.

    Implications for SEO

    A campaign accruing backlinks slowly is the most effective. It will take a few months to receive sufficient quality links to achieve PageRank 3 and longer to achieve PageRank 4. It is doubtful if higher PageRank can be achieved without the website providing sufficient interest to generate links spontaneously.
